Rise of Rome Essay

Compose an article for the esteemed Windsor Historical Journal to describe the the qualities of the Rome in the period from the early Republic to the  Roman Empire.

*Introduce the topic by

a. stating the importance of Rome in world history.  (Refer to class notes & text notes.)

b. identifying three qualities that will be the focus of the essay (CHESS or Qualities of Empire)

           c. including a thesis statement in response to the prompt. (HInt: turn the prompt into a

question and answer the question including three or more qualities or achievements that define Rome from Republic to Empire (500’s BC to 400’s AD).

Organize the remainder of your essay into two or more additional paragraphs.  

Remember these requirements for excellence in writing:

1. Use at least six sources.  When you use information from a source, even if it is paraphrased cite the source parenthetically by source letter or abbreviated title.

2. Paragaphs should include a topic sentence and be focused on a single topic.  The topic sentence need not be the first sentence, but it must be readily identifiable by the reader and should support the essay thesis.

This essay must be typed.

Double spaced.

Times New Roman or Ariel 11 point font.

Read pages 164-178 of your textbook (chapter 6: Rome and the Barbarians).

Melian Dialogue

1. Great work in reading and discussing the Melian Dialogue in class.  Read it again!

3. Use the question guide provided to critically consider the positions of the Melians and Athenians as you complete four questions from those provided.

Complete the assignment describing and evaluating Athenian pottery.  This is a fantastic opportunity to better understand the development of artistic ideals in Athens and attitudes that governed the Athenian empire.

Indo-Mediterranean Empires: Comparative Essay.

Complete the essay started in class.

Indo-Mediterranean Empires

1. Create a set of CHESS notes to compare three empires of the Indo-Mediterranean region.  You must include the Athenian and Persian empires and one more of your choice.

2. Create a parallel  timeline of four empires.  You must include the Mauryan, Athenian, Persian and one of your choice.

3. Create a map of one of the empires.

The Work of a Historian: Cyrus and the Jews

1. Read "Judaism", chapter 10, pages 307-312 and 317-320.  This section relates to the work on the Cyrus cylinder we did in class.
2. Summarize the core beliefs of the Jewish people as described on pages 307-312.
3. Define the concept of diaspora and the Diaspora described by the text, 317-320, and the Cyrus cylinder.

How to Rule as a Greek

1. Bring your textbook next lesson!
2. Compete the reading from Thomas Cahill Sailing the Wine Dark Sea, pages 114-119.

Americas: Unit Test Preparation

Prepare for a unit test on civilizations of the early Americas!
1. Locate all features and civilizations from our class maps.

2. Define and describe achievements, political qualities, religion, and cultural qualities of each large-scale civilization we have studied: Olmec, Maya, Mississippian (Cahokia), Anasazi.  Be able to identify the major achievements of the Inca and Aztec.

Mayan Achievements and Test Preparation

1. Study maps, visuals and the Mayan achievements evidence for a quiz next lesson.
2. Complete the Mayan Achievements evidence packet.
3. Compose an essay in response to the question: "What was the most remarkable Mayan achievement?"

Paragraph 1
-- Define "remarkable".
-- Identify 4 or more Mayan achievements.
-- Identify which achievement is most remarkable.
-- Identify three or more reasons for this achievement being remarkable.

Paragraph 2:
Describe in detail the most remarkable achievement AND how it relates to the other three achievements.  Use evidence from the materials provided.

Paragraph 3:
Elaborate on the most important achievement.  Why is it indeed remarkable.  Add additional details.

Americas Map

Complete the maps (pages 3 and 4) and the analysis pages (pages 8, 9 10) of the Americas map packet.  All of this can be done at home using the textbook maps or other online maps; the atlas is not required for these pages!  Due Thursday (B Day)  or Friday(A Day) 10/29 or 10/30.
